Glasgow Diaries Part One: The Start of Something New
A Pakistani American Muslim female. Those four words hold such a heavy meaning. As Pakistani American Muslim females we are always made to follow certain rules or guidelines in order to keep our families reputation in the Pakistani community untouched.
This blog will follow the untold story of a Pakistani American Muslim girl Beecee, who went off to create her own journey and along the way found love that would have either destroyed her or made her who she is today. This is not a love story, this is HER story.
June 2018: "Don't let him kiss you, don't let him kiss you" that’s exactly what ran through Beecee's mind while she was in the shower, in her student accommodation. How, you might be asking...How did she get here? Lets rewind to the beginning, where it all started, the start of something new.
October 2017: A little over a year had passed when Beecee had graduated from university with a bachelors degree in Biology/ General Science. Beecee was currently working at a local diner, formerly owned by her father. One night after work she started researching masters programs online. On the side bar, a pop-up ad came up about a university in the United Kingdom. Beecee had always loved the history and culture of the United Kingdom and studying abroad would be a dream come true. That same night, on a whim, she spent a couple hours applying to universities throughout the United Kingdom for masters programs. She decided to not say a word to her family members just yet. A couple weeks went by and she started getting acceptance letters from a few of the universities. Could this be real life, she thought? Would it be realistic to think that she could actually study abroad? Yes! She had to take this opportunity she had to escape her hometown and actually once in her life do what she dreamed of without thinking about anything or anyone else. That night she narrowed her options down to two universities. A university in Teesside, England and a university in Glasgow, Scotland.
November 2017: Beecee and her family were all sitting in the living room one night after dinner. This is it, she thought. This is her chance to tell her family that she plans on studying abroad. She turned the TV off to get their attention and expressed to them her desire to study in the United Kingdom and that she had already applied and been accepted to masters programs. They all looked a bit surprised but curiously asked questions. After a few days, Beecee was able to convince her family to let her go although, it was especially difficult to convince her mother, as always.
December 2017: The next few days Beecee started doing intense research on the student life and areas around the two universities she had narrowed down to. After much consideration and fate playing a huge role, she finally selected Glasgow, Scotland. The next few weeks she kept busy with submitting all of the paper work required for the university and her student visa. This was a very difficult and critical time during the whole process of trying to study abroad. In the meantime, Beecee started packing her whole life in suitcases, six suitcases to be exact. Finally her student visa arrived and she booked her plane ticket along with her mother and father.
January 2018: The day was finally here, it was time for her to visit the United Kingdom for the very first time. This trip was dedicated to visiting the university and finding a proper accommodation. Beecee and her parents had a week to do this. She and her father went to at least five different student accommodations in the rainy, cold and windy Glasgow weather to find a suitable student accommodation that would be her home for the next two years. One day before leaving Glasgow, she and her father finalized the perfect student accommodation, a brand new one, right across her university. Everything was starting to become real now. Beecee and her parents then got on a flight the next day, back to America. She felt really emotional knowing that the next time she will be on a flight, she will be on her own and officially moving to the United Kingdom, this was just the beginning of the most unexpected journey, with lots of laughs, many many tears and the best memories that she will cherish for the rest of her life.
